Stop Bad Breath

Chronic bad breath is a problem for millions of Americans.  The American Dental Association recently did a survey that showed that over 90% of dentists see patients with bad breath.

Is there really a solution?  Not when people use mouthwashes and mints to mask the odor.  Many mouthwashes contain alcohol which worsens the condition by drying the mouth and mints are candy which promote tooth decay.  To provide a real solution, one must investigate the causes of bad breath and eliminate them.  At Adult Dentistry of Rochester, Dr. Dulski provides bad breath diagnosis and treatment in a comprehensive way.  While transient bad breath caused by garlic, foods or burping is mainly a social problem, chronic bad breath can be an indicator of a health problem.

Anatomically speaking, the mouth is the dominant source of chronic bad breath, followed by the sinuses, lungs and in very rare cases, the stomach.  Chronic bad breath is primarily caused by dying bacteria in the mouth and gums that give off sulfur based gases called Volatile Sulfur Compounds.  The higher the number of bacteria present, the more dying bacteria there are  generating these gases.

People try all kinds of breath tests to learn if they have this embarrassing condition.  You may have tried to sniff a puff of your breath in your hand, or risked asking family or friends.  However, the best test is asking your dentist.

Today, we know more about diagnosing and treating bad breath than ever before.  Our professional dental team is equipped with the knowledge and equipment to provide you with effective programs to help you restore your sparkling fresh breath.  We can determine the source of odor in the oral cavity by determining the health of the gums.  Gum disease, or gingivitis is caused by the same bacteria that can cause bad breath.  Another major source is the tongue which collects a coating on its surface that harbors bacteria.  We can prescribe specialized aids that help in removing bacteria along the gums and on the tongue, as well as a  mouth rinse that chemically neutralizes the odor in the mouth.

Got bad breath?  Don't be the last to find out!  You either have bad breath and don't know it, suspect you have bad breath, or want assurance that your breath will always be fresh and clean.  Visit Adult Dentistry of Rochester to take the steps necessary fora sparkling fresh breath every day..

  1. Co-workers, loved ones, and the general public are willing to tolerate bad breath, up to a point. If someone does complain, their complaint needs to be taken seriously.

If your child is saying their breath is bad, again get it checked out. Kids can be downright cruel.

When its a teen, be aware that furtive use of alcohol, smoking, and/or "huffing" of household products will cause very noticeable & distinctive bad breath. Do an objective checklist based on the last few weeks:

    School Performance?
    Sleep Pattern?
    Friendships?
    Interaction with Family Members?
    Trustworthy?

If you are seeing changes, hold on confronting your teenager and quickly schedule an appointment for yourself with the school & with their MD. You need to know that the time-line between experimentation & addiction is extremely short. Trust your nose & get outside help & support as soon as possible. Don't try to resolve these issues alone.

  2. Many people aren't aware that tonsils with large cypts (or "holes") can also cause bad breath by collecting food and bacteria. People with post nasal drip are particularly prone to the collection of foul smelling overgrowths of bacteria in the tonsils, known as "tonsil stones". These "stones" are small and tend to be white or yellow.

  3. Not only do your tonsils holds odor, but your tongue do too. That is why it is also important to brush your tongue while you brush your teeth. You can also use a tongue scraper to help remove the bacteria from your tongue.

  4. Saliva is your best weapon against bad breath. That's why dry mouth, often caused by certain medications or medical conditions, leads to odor problems. By washing away food particles and bacteria, saliva helps to eliminate odor, too. If you're wondering why your breath stinks in the morning, it's largely because saliva production slows while you sleep, allowing particles and odor to linger longer. That's where sugarless gum comes in handy, as chewing it will stimulate saliva production.

  5. Xylitol products help with saliva production or relief of dry mouth. Wegmans sell these products in their health food section under the name of Zellies. It recommended to use a xylitol product five times a day to control dry mouth. The nice thing about this product is its a sugar substitute but does not bind like sugar when digested. It can be ingested but not digested in the body and comes out as waste due to the chemical makeup of the product.

  6. We checked with the Mayo Foundation for Medical Research -

Chewing Gum is to be chewed, not swallowed. Generally, it isn't harmful if swallowed by accident.

Folklore says it stays in your stomach for 7 years before being digested. It is true, it can't be digested although it does progress relatively intact is excreted in your stool.

However, large amounts of swallowed gum combined with constipation have caused intestinal blockage in children.

  7. there are a number of potential causes that could be underlying serious bad breath. If you eliminate the obvious, non-medical one—namely Bad oral hygiene—then you have a list of medical conditions to contend with. They could be oral-centered ones like periodontal infections and gum disease. Then again, you might have a serious or chronic sinus infection that you cannot cure. Other things like smoking, drinking, poor digestion, as well as constipation, liver disease, kidney problem, and diabetes are all possible contenders.
